Mr. Fahy’s 5th Class were learning about the Jail Wall disaster, John Condon, the Boy Soldier; Ballybricken Fair; and Thomas Francis Meagher. John Condon was born on Wheelbarrow Lane, just off Ballybricken. He was the youngest soldier KIA (killed in action) in World War I. The Jail Wall disaster occurred in March 1943, when 9 people were killed after the weight of stockpiled turf inside the Jail Wall caused the wall to collapse. The boys also visited Thomas Francis Meagher House at 19 The Mall, the site of the Wolfe Tone Club at 33 The Mall where the Irish Tricolour was first raised in 1848; they examined the statue of Meagher, and visited the Granville Hotel, his original family home. Finally, the class called into Supermacs for an ice-cream on the way back to school. What a fantastic day out!
