St. Stephen's De La Salle

Miss Finnegan’s and Mr. Coghlan’s 3rd Classes each enjoyed a tour of the magnificent House of Waterford Crystal showrooms and factory in December 2019. The process of glass making was described to the boys during the tour. First, everyone saw how wooden moulds were made to shape the molten glass. Then the boys saw a craftsman blowing the glass and shaping it into the wooden mould. They learned that the glass is as hot as lava from a volcano when it is taken out of the furnace!

After that, the boys visited quality control in the factory, where they watched as the glass was inspected for scratches and cracks. Once the glass was approved by quality control, they saw how it was cut and engraved. The class inspected the wheels used to cut the glass and learned that there were diamonds in the wheels to help shape and polish the glass! Finally, the boys got to see some of the beautiful glass trophies and special pieces made in the factory which are then sent all around the world! Everyone in Miss Finnegan’s and Mr. Coghlan’s 3rd Classes enjoyed the tour, and there are some photos from Miss Finnegan’s 3rd Class to view in the gallery below!
